COLOMBO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka recorded an economic growth rate of 5.3 percent during the first quarter of 2024, State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said on Monday.
Quoting reports from the Department of Census and Statistics, Siyambalapitiya said in a statement that the industrial sector alone had grown by 11.8 percent.
He said Sri Lanka recorded a negative growth earlier and the current achievement raised hopes for the country.
He said the World Bank had projected an overall growth rate of 2.2 percent for Sri Lanka this year.
The International Monetary Fund recently completed the second review of its program with Sri Lanka to unlock 336 million U.S. dollars for Sri Lanka. ■
