TOKYO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Approval ratings for Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have sunken to the lowest level since 2001, according to the latest opinion poll.

The public support rate for the LDP led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida dropped to 19 percent, down from 24 percent in the previous month, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported on Monday, citing its latest survey.

It marked the lowest rate since the methodology of the monthly poll was updated in April 2001, refreshing a previous record low of 20 percent in 2009 towards the end of the Taro Aso administration, according to the June survey.

Meanwhile, the survey showed that the support rate for the Kishida cabinet came in at 22 percent in June, marking a record low for the administration, as the disapproval rate jumped to 64 percent.

The telephone poll, conducted on Saturday and Sunday, surveyed randomly selected households with eligible voters on both landline and mobile phones, yielding 1,012 effective responses in total.
