DAR ES SALAAM, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Saturday congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa on his re-election as President of South Africa.
"On behalf of the Government and the People of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa on being once again entrusted by the people of the Republic of South Africa with a responsibility to lead them as their President," President Hassan said on her account on X, formerly Twitter.
She said Tanzania and South Africa are sister republics, adding that she looked forward to continuing to work with him to strengthen the deep fraternal bonds and historical ties between the two countries and peoples.
Lawmakers in Cape Town voted overwhelmingly on Friday to reinstate Ramaphosa, 71, for another five years after the May 29 general election produced no outright winner.
The election marked a historic turning point for South Africa, ending three decades of dominance by the African National Congress of the late African statesman Nelson Mandela. ■
