7 dead in road crash in SE Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Seven local people were killed and one other badly injured in a traffic accident in southeast Cambodia's Tboung Khmum province early Friday, a local police chief said.

The fatal crash occurred at 4:30 a.m. local time on National Road 71C in Tboung Khmum district's Roka Po Pram commune when a speedy cargo truck collided head-on with another truck from the opposite direction, said Major Mao Nary, police chief of Roka Po Pram commune.

"Seven men were killed and another one was seriously wounded in the crash," he told Xinhua over the telephone. "Speedy and drowsy driving was blamed for this tragic accident."

Casualties from road traffic accidents remain high in the Southeast Asian nation. In the entirety of 2023, a total of 1,590 people were killed and 4,515 others were injured in road crashes across the kingdom, according to a National Police report.
