KABUL, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan will harvest about 4.9 million tonnes of wheat during the current Persian calendar year 1403, which started on March 20, up 13 percent year on year, according to a report of the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock on Thursday.
The wheat is expected to be harvested on 2.14 million hectares of land across Afghanistan, said the report.
The report also noted that the increase in rainfall will lead to a higher yield of wheat.
Afghanistan reportedly needs 6.6 million tonnes of wheat annually. The country also imports wheat from abroad, mostly from its neighboring countries. ■
