TRIPOLI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Monday that it installed two water treatment plants in two villages in eastern Libya, which was hit by deadly floods in 2023.

"As part of our emergency response for water supply and water trucking in the flood-affected areas, UNICEF has installed two RO (reverse osmosis) water treatment plants in Al Mkhili and El Ezzeiat," UNICEF said in a statement.

Each plant produces 30,000 liters of drinking water per hour, ready to serve 10,000 people, including 3,000 children, the statement added.

"These plants not only secured a steady supply of potable water but also integrated seamlessly with the main water storage systems of both areas and provided a reliable source of safe water for water trucking," it said.

In September last year, Mediterranean storm Daniel triggered the largest and worst floods in Libya in decades, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and individuals going missing.
