HANOI, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Many areas in Vietnam's northeastern region reported record rainfall in May and June, local media Kinh Te & Do Thi (Economic and Urban Affairs) newspaper reported Tuesday, citing the National Center for Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting.

Nguyen Duc Hoa, deputy head of the center's weather forecast division, said some areas in Quang Ninh province reported record rainfall in 21 to 33 years, ranging from 307 to 367 mm.

Phu Lien, Hai Phong city received 228 mm of rainfall on Sunday, the highest in 45 years.

From May 11 to Monday, the total rainfall in Vietnam was 20 to 60 percent higher than the same period last year, said Hoa.

Typhoons and tropical depressions are forecast to intensify in early July. Torrential rain, thunderstorms, hails and strong winds might significantly affect local livelihoods, said the center.
