BEIRUT, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Two members of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah were killed and three civilians injured on Sunday in Israeli airstrikes on Lebanese villages, Lebanese military sources said.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said one Hezbollah member was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southeastern Lebanese village of Houla, while the other was killed in an airstrike on the village of Aitaroun.

According to the sources, two civilians were injured in Israeli airstrikes in the village of Aita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon, while the third civilian was injured in Israeli artillery shelling in the southeastern village of Kafr Kila.

Hezbollah said in a statement that it launched surface-to-air missiles at an Israeli warplane that violated the airspace of southern Lebanon on Sunday.

According to the Lebanese military sources, the Lebanese army has monitored the launch of surface-to-air missiles towards four Israeli F-16 warplanes, prompting one of the Israeli aircraft to release dozens of thermal balloons to protect the plane from the missiles.

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by Hezbollah towards Israel in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

Since the beginning of the confrontations, 512 people have been killed on the Lebanese side, including 327 Hezbollah members and 96 civilians, according to figures released by Lebanese security and medical authorities.
