DHAKA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government has taken an initiative to provide free education up to class 8 in a bid to expand and improve primary education.
Bangladeshi Education Minister Mohibul Chowdhoury revealed the plan in response to a question from a lawmaker in the parliament on Sunday.
The minister informed the house that the country's Department of Secondary and Higher Education is working on the plan. He said steps were underway to implement the initiative as soon as possible.
In Bangladesh, currently primary education up to Class 5 is compulsory, according to the country's Primary Education (Compulsory) Act, 1990. ■
