RAMALLAH, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army killed a Palestinian young man and detained 60 others in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, Palestinian sources told Xinhua on Thursday.

The man, identified as Mohammed Abu Bakr, 24, died from critical wounds he sustained by Israeli army gunfire last night in the town of Ya'bad in Jenin, the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a press statement on Thursday.

Palestinian security sources said Abu Bakr was shot in the back near a school belonging to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) during the storming of the town of Ya'bad overnight.

The Israeli army arrested 60 Palestinians in the West Bank, according to a joint statement by the Palestinian Authority Commission for Prisoners' Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club on Thursday.

The Israeli army has not commented on the incident yet. The total number of arrests after Oct. 7, 2023, rose to more than 9,100 in the West Bank, according to official Palestinian statistics.
