DAR ES SALAAM, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Wednesday's grisly road accident in Mbeya Region in Tanzania's southern highlands rose from 14 to 16, an official said on Thursday.
Petro Seme, the head nurse at Mbeya Regional Referral Hospital, said the death toll rose after two critically injured people died while receiving treatment.
"A team of doctors is working around the clock to save the lives of three other critically injured persons who are admitted in the intensive care unit," Seme told Xinhua by telephone.
On Wednesday afternoon, 14 people were killed, and 17 others were critically injured after a truck knocked down several vehicles, including a minibus, said Mbeya Regional Commissioner Juma Homera.
Homera said the tragedy occurred at Mbembela Hills on a steep slope at 1:20 p.m. local time, when the truck, whose driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, knocked down the minibus, a saloon car, and several tricycles. ■
