VIENTIANE, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Construction of bus lanes and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations under the Vientiane Sustainable Urban Transport Project has begun to improve public transport and ease traffic congestion in Lao capital Vientiane.
The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, Lao News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a bus depot, repair center and BRT command center will be built along with the installation of 41 traffic lights in Sikhottabong, Sisattanak, Chanthabouly, Xaysettha and Xaythany districts.
The Vientiane Sustainable Urban Transport Project was authorized in 2016 at a cost of 99.7 million U.S. dollars.
The project comprises five main activities involving public transport systems, parking management and enforcement, and traffic management systems. The activities will also improve public spaces and non-motorized transport. ■
