BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese comedy "The Last Frenzy" maintained its dominance at the box office chart on the Chinese mainland on Thursday, according to data from the China Movie Data Information Network.
The film, which explores life's choices in the face of death, earned 5.46 million yuan (about 768,100 U.S. dollars) in box office sales that day.
It was followed by the action crime thriller "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In," which garnered box office sales of 5.02 million yuan on Thursday.
American sci-fi "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" came in third with a daily earning of 1.72 million yuan.
The total box office revenue on the Chinese mainland stood at 23.41 million yuan on Thursday.
China is gearing up for this year's summer movie season, which runs from the beginning of June to the end of August.
According to the Chinese movie data platform Maoyan, 53 new films are scheduled for release during this period, including award-winning animated film "Robot Dreams" and "Civil War" from the United States' A24 arthouse studio. ■
