ATHENS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Greece's Olympiacos won the 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League title on Wednesday, defeating Italy's Fiorentina 1-0 in Athens.
Olympiacos forward Ayoub El Kaabi scored in the 115th minute of extra time, securing victory for the Reds of Piraeus at AEK Arena stadium.
This triumph marks the first European trophy in Olympiacos' history and the first European title for any Greek football club.
"Olympiacos made history. A great evening for the club and the entire Greek football," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote on X.
When the referee blew the final whistle, Greek fans erupted in celebration both inside and outside the stadium. Thousands had gathered in a central square of Piraeus to watch the final on giant screens set up by the municipality.
Fiorentina, last season's runners-up, on the other hand, failed to overcome their disappointment from Prague in 2023 when they lost 2-1 to West Ham. ■
