UNITED NATIONS, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The UN peacekeeping chief has emphasized the critical need for improved situational awareness and intelligence in response to evolving challenges facing UN operations.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN under-secretary-general for peace operations, pointed out the significance of enhanced "peacekeeping awareness, situational awareness, and peacekeeping intelligence," which are fundamental to the effectiveness of operations amidst the increasing complexities of modern conflict environments, during a virtual interview with Xinhua on the cusp of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29.

Reflecting on this year's theme for the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, "Fit for the Future, Building Better Together," Lacroix detailed three primary areas of focus. "First, we need to emphasize to our member states that peacekeeping is inherently political, aimed at supporting political efforts towards a durable solution to crises," he explained. This requires "stronger, more united support from member states."

He also highlighted the dangers faced by peacekeepers from digital threats such as fake news and disinformation, as well as traditional threats from armed groups.

"Peacekeepers are faced with environments that are becoming more dangerous," Lacroix said, stressing the need for continuous international support to adapt to these evolving threats.

Significantly, Lacroix aligned his strategy with the secretary-general's New Agenda for Peace, which advocates for reshaping operational strategies to enhance the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping missions.

"The New Agenda for Peace is crucial as it brings strong messages that need reflection in our operational strategies," Lacroix stated.

He emphasized the need for "prioritized mandates and expanded efforts in safety, security, digital transformation, and counter-disinformation strategies."

"We cannot do everything. We need to focus where we can add the most value," Lacroix continued.

He emphasized that efforts to enhance peacekeeping through improved safety, security, digital transformation, combating fake news and disinformation, as well as refining planning and performance assessments, must not only continue but also expand.

Lacroix stressed the importance of "addressing those drivers of conflict," such as the impact of climate change and illegal transnational activities.

Additionally, he emphasized that "better support for peace enforcement operations" is crucial, noting that such tasks "cannot be conducted by blue helmets" alone and require the involvement of "regional and sub-regional organizations."

Moreover, Lacroix discussed the necessity for new models of peace operations, considering both UN peace operations and non-UN peace enforcement operations.

"We also need to think about what future peace operations might look like, which involves both existing UN frameworks and potential new models," he remarked.

Building trust with local communities remains a cornerstone of effective peacekeeping, a process enhanced by the increased presence of women and robust community engagement strategies.

"Building trust with local communities is very important, achieved through engagement by our civilian teams, police, and military," Lacroix added.
