JAKARTA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted off Indonesia's western Aceh province on Tuesday evening without triggering giant waves, the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The agency had earlier released the magnitude of the quake at 6.2 before revising it.

The quake struck at 18:52 p.m. Jakarta time (1152 GMT) with its epicenter situated at 95 km northwest of Sinabang town and the depth at 22 km under the seabed, the agency said.

The tremors were felt at IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Nagan Raya regency, West Aceh regency, Simeulue regency, and III MMI in Southwest Aceh (Aceh Barat Daya) regency and South Aceh regency, it said.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning as the tremors would not cause giant waves.

Several aftershocks followed the main shock of 5.9 magnitude, it added.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes for its position on a vulnerable quake-stricken zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
