COLOMBO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed officials to deliver immediate relief to those impacted by the adverse weather conditions as heavy rains and strong winds continued to lash out across the country, said the President's Media Division (PMD) on Tuesday.
In a statement, the PMD said that Wickremesinghe also directed officials to maintain relief efforts until the situation improves.
The Disaster Management Center (DMC) is also taking steps to compensate those who lost their lives, the PMD added.
According to the DMC, over 44,000 people remained affected by days of strong winds and heavy rains while the death toll by Tuesday morning rose to seven.
Nineteen people were admitted to hospital with injuries, DMC statistics showed.
The security forces were also requested to remain alert in the event search and rescue operations were required, the DMC said. ■
