VILNIUS, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The presidential runoff kicked off in Lithuania on Sunday, as incumbent President Gitanas Nauseda contends with incumbent Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte.
According to the Central Electoral Commission of Lithuania (VRK), 2,385,234 people are on the voter list. A total of 1,895 polling stations open from 7 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) to 8 p.m. (1700 GMT) across the country.
President Nauseda, who runs for re-election as an independent candidate, obtained 43.95 percent of the votes in the first round on May 12, followed by Simonyte, who garnered 20.5 percent.
The top two candidates entered the runoff as neither of them received the required simple majority of votes in the first round, according to the VRK.
Nauseda and Simonyte already faced off in the previous presidential election run-off in 2019, when Nauseda won over 65 percent of the vote. ■
