NAIROBI, May 25 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed Saturday morning in an accident involving a minibus and a truck along the busy Nakuru-Eldoret highway in northwestern Kenya.

Police said in a security report that eight other passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries after the 3:00 a.m. local time accident near the Salgaa area.

According to police, the minibus rammed into the rear of an unknown truck, which disappeared shortly after the accident. "As a result, four people died on the spot. They included three women and a man."

This is the latest such accident to occur in the country amid ongoing campaigns to combat the menace. Fatal accidents have been on the rise, prompting calls for authorities and other stakeholders to take steps to address the trend.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority show that more than 1,400 people have died in separate accidents in the past four months alone.
