TEHRAN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Interim President Mohammad Mokhber said on Wednesday the revival of ties between Tehran and Cairo would continue with strength, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, who is in Tehran to attend the funeral of Iran's late President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The development and deepening of bilateral interactions in political, economic and cultural sectors will continue with strength, Mokhber said.
Shoukry, the first Egyptian foreign minister visiting Tehran since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash on Sunday in the northwestern Iranian province of East Azarbaijan.
He expressed Egypt's willingness to strengthen relations with Iran, praising Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian for their efforts in promoting interactions and convergence among Muslim states.
Iran and Egypt severed diplomatic relations in 1980. In recent months, both countries have expressed willingness to mend ties by settling differences on certain issues.
In May, Shoukry and Amir-Abdollahian exchanged views on the latest joint efforts to improve bilateral ties during a meeting on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Banjul, capital of The Gambia. ■
