VIENTIANE, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Laos' Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare and officials from the International Labor Organization have taken a step towards improving workplace conditions by acknowledging the need for improved data on accidents and illnesses.
Officials convened in Lao capital Vientiane on Tuesday to discuss the collection of comprehensive data about occupational safety and health (OSH) in Laos, according to a report from the Lao Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare on Thursday.
The meeting intended to strengthen the capacity of Laos concerning the national system for OSH data collection.
At the meeting, participants discussed ways to formulate a plan or activity that will move towards a systematic collection and reporting system that can be used in a uniform manner, where the people who will participate in the actual analysis are the workers themselves.
The ultimate aim is to improve the reporting, recording, and notification of workplace accidents and occupational diseases in Laos so that the facts are widely known and can be used as a reference going forward, according to the report. ■
