DAR ES SALAAM, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) on Tuesday announced the resumption of train operations following the renovation of the main line, which was damaged by heavy rains in March.
TAZARA said in a statement that train operations were suspended on April 1, after landslides caused by heavy rains damaged the Mlimba-Makambako railway track in Tanzania.
Noting that all trains will adhere to their regular schedules, the statement said normal train operations, including passenger trains, will resume on May 25, and cross-border trains from the port city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia will resume on May 28.
"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our customers for their patience and understanding during the past seven weeks, when train services were operating below normal capacity due to the closure of the mainline," said the statement.
The TAZARA railway, also known as the "Uhuru Railway" or "Independent Railway," spans 1,860 km from Tanzania to Zambia. Construction commenced in October 1970 and was completed by July 1976. Serving as a major transportation artery spanning East Africa and Central-Southern Africa, it stands as China's largest foreign aid project to date. ■
