NAIROBI, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's economy grew by 5.6 percent in 2023, up from 4.9 percent in 2022, the country's national statistics bureau said on Monday.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said in the Economic Survey 2024 that the country's economic expansion was mainly driven by a recovery in the agricultural sector due to favorable weather conditions that boosted crop and livestock production.
"The agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors expanded by 6.5 percent in 2023, compared to a contraction of 1.5 percent in 2022," according to the survey, which is an annual publication that provides the government's socioeconomic information covering five years.
The survey says the manufacturing sector grew by 2 percent in 2023 due to the expansion of non-food products such as leather, metals and plastics.
The statistics agency said the transport and storage sector expanded by 6.2 percent in 2023, compared to 5.8 percent growth in 2022. "The growth was driven by increased activities in transport via railway, port activities and air transport."
The KNBS said the passenger and freight movements through the standard gauge railway grew by 14.1 percent and 7.3 percent to 2,729,000 passengers and 6,533,000 tonnes, respectively, in 2023. ■
