BEIRUT, May 17 (Xinhua) -- A Hezbollah official and four Syrian nationals were killed, and three Lebanese civilians were injured on Friday in Israeli airstrikes in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon, about 70 km from the Lebanon-Israel border, according to Lebanese military sources.

The sources, who spoke anonymously, said the casualties were caused by Israeli air raids on homes, a stone factory, a car, and orchards in the town of Adousiya and the villages of Marwanieh and Al-Najariah in Sidon.

According to the sources, the killed Hezbollah official was a local leader of the group called Hussein Khodor Mahdi.

A Lebanese medical source reported that two of the four Syrian fatalities were children.

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.
