BAGHDAD, May 15 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi soldier was killed and two others were injured on Wednesday in an attack by the Islamic State (IS) militants on a military base in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk, a security source said.
The attack occurred in the evening when IS militants launched a raid on the base near the town of Dibis, northwest of the namesake provincial capital of Kirkuk, some 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Aysar Ibrahim from the media office of Kirkuk's Provincial Police Command told Xinhua.
The troops at the base engaged in a fierce clash with the attackers and forced them to withdraw, Ibrahim added.
The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. ■
