TEHRAN, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani on Wednesday condemned an assassination attempt earlier in the day against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
He made the remarks in a statement published on the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry after Fico was seriously wounded in a shooting incident after an away-from-home government meeting in the Trencin region of Slovakia. Kanaani also wished Fico a speedy recovery.
According to a post from the Slovak prime minister's social media account, Fico was in a life-threatening condition after the shooting.
It added Fico was transported by helicopter to a hospital in the central Slovak city of Banska Bystrica, as the flight to the capital Bratislava would take more time.
The suspect, who was detained on the spot, is reported to be a 71-year-old man. ■
