ZAGREB, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Gordan Jandrokovic was re-elected as speaker of the Croatian parliament on Thursday at the first meeting of newly-elected lawmakers after parliamentary elections on April 17.

Jandrokovic gained 144 votes in the 151-seat parliament to become parliament speaker for the third time.

"To receive the trust for the third time is truly an exceptional honor. I congratulate the newly elected representatives once again, many are sitting on the parliamentary benches for the first time. I wish all of us a quality mandate," Jandrokovic said after he was re-elected.

Jandrokovic, born in 1967, is from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). In May 2017, he was first elected speaker of the Croatian parliament and was re-elected in July 2020.

During last month's parliamentary elections, the center-right HDZ won 61 seats and the right-wing Homeland Movement won 14 seats. The HDZ and the Homeland Movement, along with representatives of minorities, reached a parliamentary majority after a series of negotiations.

The Croatian parliament is unicameral and its members are elected to serve a four-year term.
