RIO DE JANEIRO, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo edged closer to a place in the Copa Libertadores knockout stage on Wednesday with a 4-0 home victory over previously unbeaten Bolivar.
Gerson struck in the first minute at the Maracana stadium while Ayrton Medeiros and Everton Soares also scored before halftime.
Former Fiorentina striker Pedro added a fourth goal after the interval as the Brazilian side moved to second in Group E with seven points from five outings.
Bolivar remain top of Group E with 10 points and the La Paz-based outfit only need a draw in their last group match at home to Palestino on May 28 to reach the last 16.
"Our aggression was fundamental because it gave us opportunities against a team that is very well organized," Flamengo manager Tite told reporters after the match.
"They played a high line against us and that meant that we were able to find spaces in behind, which we capitalized on."
In other Copa Libertadores group matches on Wednesday, The Strongest won 4-0 at home to Huachipato, Nacional prevailed 1-0 at Deportivo Tachira, Colo-Colo drew 1-1 at Alianza Lima and Palmeiras won 2-1 at home to Independiente del Valle. ■
