DHAKA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government is gearing up to launch its second satellite, said the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL).

Following the successful launch of the first satellite in 2018, Bangladesh is now preparing to launch the second satellite, Shahjahan Mahmood, chairman of the BSCL, said on Sunday.

The deal for the second satellite will be finalized within the next two to three months and it will be launched in two to three years, he said.

According to the official, the second satellite which is to be a "Bangladesh Earth Observatory Satellite," will be used for monitoring natural disasters, managing agricultural resources, assessing environmental changes and others.

Mahmood, however, expressed the hope that the lifetime of the country's first satellite could be increased by three years to 18 years due to the efficient launch.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said a memorandum of understanding has already been signed with France for the second satellite.

He said the launch of the new satellite would help Bangladesh to navigate the challenge of the fourth industrial revolution.
