TOKYO, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Japan's weather agency on Monday urged people in eastern part of the country to stay on alert for landslides and flooding as torrential rain may fall in the region until Monday evening.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said extremely unstable atmospheric conditions in northern and eastern Japan are causing downpours on the Pacific coast in the Tokai and Tohoku regions.
Severe thunderstorms may hit limited areas of eastern Japan until Monday evening, according to the agency.
In the 24-hour period through Tuesday noon, up to 130 mm of rain is expected in the Kanto-Koshin region, the JMA said.
Weather officials urged caution for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swelling rivers, lightning, gusts and hailstorms, advising people to take shelter in sturdy buildings if the sky suddenly turns dark as it is possibly a sign of developed thunderheads approaching. ■
