VIENTIANE, May 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 trainers, players, and officials from institutes, academies, and universities across Laos will attend the 2nd Lao University Games scheduled to be held from May 5 to 14 in the Lao capital Vientiane.
The competition will feature sports including running, football, badminton, taekwondo, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw, indoor and beach volleyball, basketball, karate, judo, e-sports and petanque, according to a Lao News Agency report on Friday.
The competition aims to promote solidarity among Lao institutes and colleges, raise the level of each sport, and contribute to students' physical and mental fitness, benefiting their study and future work for the national socio-economic development, chairman of the Lao University Games Oudom Phonekhampheng told a press conference on Tuesday.
The purpose of the competition is also to select outstanding and gifted athletes to represent Lao university students at the ASEAN University Games and other international sporting events. ■
