TOKYO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher on Tuesday tracking overnight gains in the U.S. stock market despite the cautious market sentiments.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, went up by 113.55 points, or 0.30 percent, from Monday to close the day at 37,552.16.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 3.77 points, or 0.14 percent, higher at 2,666.23.

Market watchers here noted that the Japanese stock market enjoyed a buying spree tracking the overnight rally on Wall Street, but there was a wait-and-see mood in the Tokyo market ahead of earnings announcements by major companies and the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting.

Local analysts also pointed out that many semiconductor-related stocks, such as Lasertec, Disco, and Socionext, saw apparent losses.

On the Prime Market, gainers were led by insurance, securities and construction issues.

While the Prime Market has seen the lowest level of trading value since Dec. 29, 2023, issues that advanced outpaced those that declined by 936 to 651, while 65 ended the day unchanged.
