NAROK, Kenya, April 22 (Xinhua) -- At least six people died Sunday night after two passenger cars collided head-on in Narok County, southwest Kenya, the police confirmed Monday.

Narok Central sub-county police commander John Momanyi said the accident, which occurred in the Silanga area, saw a Subaru Forester colliding head-on with a Toyota Sienta while it was trying to overtake another vehicle.

The Sienta, with six passengers, was heading toward Mulot, while the Subaru was heading in the opposite direction to Narok, he said.

"The six people, including the driver of the Toyota Sienta, died on the spot," Momanyi said over the phone. "Those injured were taken to different hospitals in Narok town."

At least 3,500 people are killed and over 20,000 critically injured on Kenyan roads every year, a majority of them pedestrians, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Between January and March this year, more than 1,200 people were killed on Kenyan roads, the highest quarterly toll since 2022, the NTSA said.
