BUDAPEST, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Hungarian National Election Committee (NVB) registered on Thursday the Party of Respect and Freedom (TISZA) for the European parliamentary and Hungarian municipal elections scheduled for June 9.
Peter Magyar, a major critic of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his government, submitted the application to NVB on Wednesday.
TISZA can now start collecting nominations for participation from April 20. The ballot will feature the "Rise, Hungarians!" logo and the name of the party.
Magyar, 43, is the ex-husband of former Justice Minister Judit Varga who was forced to stand down from public life over a pardon scandal.
TISZA, founded in 2021 in the northern Hungarian city of Eger as a centrist grassroots community, was previously little known to the public. It is also the name of Hungary's second-largest river.
Last Saturday, Magyar organized a demonstration gathering tens of thousands of people, where he announced his intention to "build a new sovereign, modern, European Hungary."
He announced that he would start a national election campaign, and has called for protests on May 5. ■
