WINDHOEK, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Namibia men's football team coach Collin Benjamin has been nominated for the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Men's Coach of the Year Award, the country's football governing body NFA announced on Wednesday.
COSAFA is an association of football-playing nations in Southern Africa affiliated with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Benjamin assumed the helm of the national team in 2022 and swiftly left an indelible mark on the team's trajectory.
Among his notable achievements was a remarkable victory over African powerhouse Cameroon, securing a 2-1 win that played a pivotal role in Namibia's qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in February.
Under his guidance, Namibia achieved a historic milestone by advancing to the round of 16, marking a significant first for the country on the continental stage.
"I am personally proud to be recognized for the achievements with the team on a regional level and thank the main protagonists in all of this, which are the players for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to put Namibia on the map," he said.
Benjamin faces stiff competition for the coveted award, contending with seasoned coaches such as Rulani Mokwena from Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and Morena Ramoreboli representing Jwaneng Galaxy (Botswana).
The winner of the COSAFA Men's Coach of the Year Award will be unveiled at an awards ceremony scheduled for April 19 in Durban. ■
