COLOMBO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Maldivian government has implemented a measure to lower the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years old, the government's news portal Public Service Media (PSM) said Sunday.
Quoting Ali Ihusaan, minister of homeland security and technology, the PSM said the key challenge in addressing juvenile delinquency is the age threshold for criminal responsibility, which currently stands at 15.
He said that approximately 200 juveniles have been identified as associated with crime, and most of them are aged between 12 and 13.
In recent days, a video of two youths attacking another boy has gone viral in the island country and the government had promised to take action against bullying of children.
The government has also established a task force in charge of combating child bullying, the PSM said. ■
