YAOUNDE, April 1 (Xinhua) -- A seven-day conflict between farmers and herders in Chad has resulted in the deaths of 23 people, a senior official said Monday.

The killing of a man from an Arab community sparked the violence, which took place from March 21 to 27 in three villages in the Moyen-Chari province in southern Chad, Minister of Communication Abdraman Koulamallah told reporters.

Local media reported that more than 100 homes were set ablaze and about 100 herds of livestock were killed during the clashes.

Koulamallah said that 21 people had been arrested in connection with the violence.

Conflicts between farmers and herders over land disputes are common in southern and eastern Chad. Last month, 42 people were killed in armed clashes between rival communities in the country's eastern region.
