SUVA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Fijians will dig deeper into their pockets as fuel prices increase from April, Fijivillage reported on Monday.

Unleaded fuel has gone up by nine cents and now costs 3 Fijians dollars (some 1.3 U.S. dollar) per liter, diesel costs 11 cents more and now costs 2.69 Fijians dollars (about 1.2 U.S. dollar) a liter.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission said the prices issued are maximum wholesale and retail prices, and the wholesalers and retailers can sell the refined fuel products at the maximum wholesale and retail prices or below the authorized prices.

They said inspectors will continue to conduct checks during the coming weeks to ensure ongoing compliance.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the government is actively engaged in a comprehensive review of the Petroleum Act to effectively address the evolving challenges facing the petroleum sector in Fiji.

This includes clarifying existing laws and updating regulations to adapt to changes in markets and technology, and to fulfil climate change commitments.

Rabuka said Fiji had a heavy reliance on imported fuels, which currently contribute a staggering 88 percent to the country's primary energy supply.
