DAMASCUS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- A suspected Israeli missile strike targeted a building within the compound of the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus on Monday afternoon, according to Xinhua reporters on the scene.

Reporters saw thick plumes of smoke rising from the embassy building located on the Mazzeh Highway to the west of Damascus.

Ambulances rushed to the scene while military vehicles swiftly cordoned off the embassy's perimeter.

The demolished structure is believed to be the consular section, with an Iranian flag resting amidst the wreckage. As of now, there is no official information available regarding casualties.
