MAPUTO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing rainy season, which commenced in October last year, has resulted in the loss of 139 lives, and injuries to 198 individuals and has impacted nearly 140,000 people in Mozambique, local media reported.

The government, through the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management, is actively engaged in assisting the affected families, Filimao Suaze, spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, was quoted by Radio Mozambique Wednesday.

To date, at least 9,485 houses have been flooded, along with 19 schools, 49 roads and 13 health facilities being affected, he said. Additionally, several transit routes have been blocked.

Suaze also noted that the heavy rains over the past weekend resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, all due to lightning strikes, in the southern part of the country.
