ADEN, Yemen, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's presidential council on Wednesday appointed Shayea Mohsen Al-Zindani as the country's new foreign minister, succeeding Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak, who also serves as the country's prime minister.

Having previously held the position of Yemen's ambassador to several nations, Al-Zindani's most recent post has been Yemen's ambassador to Saudi Arabia since 2017.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for Yemen, which has been engulfed in a protracted conflict since late 2014 when Houthi forces seized control of the capital Sanaa. The Yemeni government has since been operating from the southern port city of Aden, designated as the country's temporary capital.

As the conflict in Yemen enters its 10th year, over half of the country's population is in desperate need of aid, and an estimated 17.8 million people require health assistance, 50 percent of them children, according to the United Nations.
