TOKYO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan saw a record number of people with disabilities employed in the private sector at about 1,107,000 for the fiscal year of 2023, the country's labor authority said on Wednesday.

The number of people with disabilities employed in private firms with five or more employees during the fiscal year ending in March marked an increase of 256,000 compared to the fiscal 2018 level, surpassing the 1-million milestone for the first time, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare.

The average length of employment and income also showed positive growth trends, indicating an expanding job market and improving conditions for stable employment among the people with disabilities.

The breakdown of employment figures showed that 526,000 people with physical disabilities, 275,000 with intellectual disabilities, 215,000 with mental disabilities, and 91,000 with developmental disabilities were employed.

Across different types of disabilities, the majority of individuals with physical disabilities worked regular hours, which equals 30 or more, per week, accounting for 75.1 percent, the report showed.

The ministry also reported increases in the average monthly earnings among employed individuals with disabilities compared to the previous survey.
