MEXICO CITY, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday pledged economic support for migrants from Colombia and Ecuador to address the migration issue.
The best way to limit migrant flows is to provide support for the country of origin, he said at a daily press conference, urging the U.S. government to allocate funds to Latin America for this purpose.
He also reiterated his opposition to using coercive means to address the migration issue, such as border militarization, jail, or tougher legislation.
Last week, Mexico announced an agreement with Venezuela to offer 110 U.S. dollars every month for six months to each Venezuelan migrant who agrees to be repatriated to their home country. ■
