TEHRAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Members of a "terrorist" group have killed a policeman and an infant in an attack on a law enforcement patrol unit in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, the official news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday.
The attack, which occurred on Monday night, involved a gunfire exchange between the "terrorists" and the forces of Khash County's commando unit, according to the IRNA.
The policeman, identified as Mohammad Zakhireh, sustained severe injuries during the attack and later succumbed to his wounds while being transferred to the hospital.
During the armed clash, bullets fired by the "terrorists" hit members of a family who were passing by in their car, killing a newborn and injuring two others, said the report.
The report gave no further details regarding the "terrorist" group involved in the incident.
Bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, Sistan and Baluchestan province has witnessed several terrorist attacks on both civilians and security forces over the past years.
On Dec. 15, 2023, 11 policemen were killed and seven others injured in an attack on a police headquarters in Rask County, for which the Jaish al-Zulm "terrorist group" claimed responsibility. ■
