AMMAN, March 25 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday stressed the need for immediate action by the international community to mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

He made the remarks at a meeting in Amman with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which they discussed the dangerous situation in Gaza and the role of UN agencies in undertaking their humanitarian duties in the Strip, according to a statement by the Royal Hashemite Court.

King Abdullah affirmed Jordan's commitment to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza through all available means and highlighted close coordination with various countries and international organizations to bolster the humanitarian response efforts, the statement added.

The king reiterated the importance of an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza that would enable its residents to return to their homes. He also stressed Jordan's rejection of the displacement of Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank.

He warned of extremist settler violence against the Palestinians in the West Bank and the violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, the statement added.

They also emphasized the need to continue supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to facilitate the delivery of its humanitarian services in accordance with its UN mandate, especially in light of the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, according to the statement.

The UN Security Council on Monday adopted Resolution 2728 demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, and calling for the release of all hostages.

Jordan's Foreign Ministry welcomed the adoption of the resolution. Ministry spokesman Sufian Al-Qudah stressed the necessity for Israel to comply with the resolution, which underscores the protection of civilians and allows for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, according to a statement by the ministry.
