ACCRA, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The government of Ghana has launched a project to distribute 1.3 million free computer tablets to high school students to accelerate digital literacy in the country.

Launching the Ghana Smart Schools Project Monday, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the initiative is part of the government's measures to ensure that all sectors of the country are digitalized. Starting with 15 schools during the first phase, the project aims to distribute free tablets to students in all senior high schools across the country.

He said the government is convinced that digitalization is what would propel the next phase of the free senior high school program, as it would allow a seamless online and offline teaching and learning experience and enhance an environmentally friendly learning environment.

Akufo-Addo also announced plans to construct at least 30 smart schools across the country by the end of the year. The president said the government also planned to provide tablets and laptops for students and teachers at tertiary levels at discounted prices to facilitate academic work as part of the smart learning project.

"Education is at the center of poverty eradication, and as we gather here today, let us reflect on the crucial role education plays in shaping the future of our nation," Akufo-Addo added.
