BUDAPEST, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed, and several others injured after a sports car competing in a Hungarian rally veered off course and crashed into a group of spectators, local police said here on Sunday.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at the Esztergom-Nyerges Rally in the Komarom-Esztergom county, some 60 km north of Budapest, leaving at least seven people injured, according to a statement of the national police.
It has prompted an immediate halt to the rally. Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Numerous ambulances and rescue helicopters were swiftly dispatched to the scene to aid the victims.
The Esztergom-Nyerges Rally, a prominent event in Hungary's motorsport calendar, features a series of speed stages across different tracks. The tracks, stretching between 8.5 to 10 km, are situated approximately 50-65 km northwest of Budapest, near the Slovakian border. ■
