WINDHOEK, March 21 (Xinhua) -- An Angolan man died after being attacked by an elephant in northern Namibia, authorities said Thursday.

The attack occurred Wednesday night at Otjorute Village in the Ruacana area, inside the Uukolonkadhi Conservancy, said Romeo Muyunda, spokesman of Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

The victim was among a group of people trying to chase the elephant away from a field, he said, adding that efforts are underway to locate the elephant, and investigations are ongoing.

The Uukolonkadhi Conservancy, like many conservation areas in Namibia, is home to diverse wildlife, including elephants, where human-wildlife conflicts occasionally happen.

According to government statistics, since 2019, at least 33 people have been killed and 54 others injured due to human-wildlife conflict in Namibia.

Namibia is estimated to have 21,090 elephants, according to a survey released in 2023.
