COLOMBO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A no-confidence motion against Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was defeated in Parliament on Thursday by a majority of 42 votes, according to local media reports.

The vote was taken after three days of debate presided by Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse. The motion moved by the opposition received 75 votes in favor and 117 votes against.

The motion, brought forth by the opposition, alleges that the speaker disregarded key recommendations from the Supreme Court concerning the recently passed Online Safety Bill.
