LONDON, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Vaughan Gething was confirmed as Wales' new first minister by the Welsh parliament on Wednesday.

The Senedd, the Welsh parliament, confirmed that Gething will succeed Mark Drakeford, who announced his intention to quit in December after five years in the role.

The 50-year-old economy minister won the Welsh Labour leadership contest last week, beating Education Minister Jeremy Miles with 51.7 percent of the vote.
